Protectionist Demonstration in Essex Opens Political Rally

A public dinner by the Essex Agricultural Protection Society honored the Duke of Richmond and Lord George Bentinck though the Duke attended none. Bentinck argued protection will endure, warn against free trade, and urged new leaders to uphold agricultural interests amid famine fears and Corn Law debates. He claimed Ireland’s plight could be eased by protection, pressed malt tax restoration, and warned against abandoning England’s navigation laws and imperial trade advantages. The meeting closed with speeches by Sir John Tyrrell and Mr Newdegate amid strong applause.
