Devastating City Fire Destroys Haberdashers Hall and More

A major blaze in Gresham Street London destroyed the Haberdashers' Company hall and damaged surrounding premises. The fire, starting in a carpet warehouse jointly run by Tapling and Hellaby, doomed the hall, offices, and linked buildings, with losses estimated at over £100,000 and 300 people suddenly unemployed. Fire brigades battled the flames for hours, saving some paintings while roof and interiors were gutted.
