Bankhouse Reid firm suspended with gains of 1.5 million

The Reid, Irving, and Co mercantile firm has suspended payments, liabilities estimated at £1,500,000, with over £900,000 in acceptances. The collapse traces to overextension and weak capital, including £600,000 tied in Mauritius and West Indies estates. The head director is a former Bank of England official. Observers deem this a mercantile failure and warn that genuine credit remains intact for prudent traders.
