Road to Ruin at Drury ends with lively praise and strong cast

The Road to Ruin at Drury Lane drew a thinner crowd but earned high praise from critics for Holcroft’s enduring comedy. Performances by Mrs. Jones, Mrs. Stirling, Mr. Phelps, Mr. Anderson, and especially Mr. Mathews as Goldfinch were lauded for wit, character, and verisimilitude. The company’s selections and fresh talent were commended as worthy of revival next week.

Dramatic burlesque at Strand theatre reels in crowds

A lively Strand theatre program features Rory M Nab in disguise, Florence and Mrs M Wheezle, with supporting roles by Fitzjames and Miss Le Batt. The Royal Adelaide Gallery presents an Infant Thalia and two songs, and the Chinese exhibition at Hyde Park Corner impresses with its vast collection curated by Nathan Dunn, including 258 state lanterns and rare birds, while Paris opera gossip and local fairs close the day.

Bankrupt corn speculator passes examination in прош

In a Middlesex court, Henry Baxen, a major corn speculator, presented a voluminous balance sheet covering 1 April 1840 to 6 September 1842. After questions from Commissioner Evans and the official assignee, creditors’ examinations were waived and Baxen was declared to have passed his final examination.
