Promissory marriage breach case at Law and County Court
Ann Elliott sued a Camden solicitor for breach of promise of marriage claiming 20 pounds with costs. The man, resident at Randolph Terrace, approached Elliott in Lowther Arcade Strand in summer 1835, offered marriage and pin money. He later married another woman, leaving Elliott, daughter of a Chelsea washerwoman, with compensation awarded and a rebuke for the defendant’s conduct.
