Trial of a Slave Cargo at Hartford over the Amistad case

The Hartford circuit court opened on September 17 1839 focusing on the Amistad Africans custody and habeas corpus. Lawyers debated jurisdiction and property rights while affidavits from John Ferry and others linked the Africans to Bandaboo Mandingo origins. The judge ruled the district court lacked jurisdiction to discharge the captives and ordered further investigation into where seizure occurred with a November hearing anticipated.
