Man Presents as James Bryan in Kensington Suit over Hidden Papers

A man calling himself James Bryan, aged about, wearing tartan and dusty attire, appears before a magistrate in Kensington after leaving a debtor’s lodgings at No. 8 Sutton Street. He produced a bundle of private letters and papers claimed to be copies addressed to Queen Victoria and other officials, warning against coronation ceremonies and urging charitable works. The landlady, Mrs. Stewart, seeks charge for debt and asserts the items, including royal portraits and gazettes, were not worth the rent. The inspector and magistrate consider custody of the documents, which Bryan insists are his secret papers and deserve publication.
