A fearful collision between two passenger trains occurred yesterday morning at the Keymer branch junction between Haywards Heath and Hassock's Gate, nine miles from Brighton. Several passengers were seriously injured including Mr Wyon the medallist to the Royal Mint and Mr Driver, a land surveyor. The first down parliamentary train and the Hastings morning express collided as signals were misread. both engineers acted to stop, but the express was cut in two. No lives were lost, but many were hurt. care and aid were quickly provided, with most passengers later sent to Brighton. The line manager and Hon Captain Hotham investigated, blaming the signal fault but custody over the operator was noted.
