The Charges against the Authorities of St Pancras Workhouse

A long account alleges abuse of paupers in St Pancras Workhouse including confinement in the oakum room, denial of discharge money, meals and diet irregularities, and threats of continued imprisonment. Letters from inmates describe severe conditions, unsanitary feather rooms, and opposition to parish authorities led by master Mr Lee, with appeals to Parliament and The Times for relief.

Parsons Wife Dies Under Suspicion of Police Conduct

A report claimed constables and Sergeant Parsons would be charged after a coroner’s inquest but proved false. Mrs Parsons died in dangerous health after surveillance ordered toward her husband and the police, with testimony alleging harsh treatment by Superintendent Pearce. The inquest and police leaders discussed measures to cover murderers, including funds tied to a large indemnity, while the coroner’s case spurs further scrutiny.
