Dorset Potato Blight Devastates Crops Across Fiddleford Area

Dorset authorities record widespread potato disease with reports from Fiddleford and Sturminster. Observers note diseased potatoes harden when boiled and speculate foul air or poison as possible causes. Local gardeners warn the blight threatens food supply and livelihoods.

A young man on the Railway Com boat from Blackwall to Gravesend fired a pistol on the Erith approach. He was found with a head wound and a second ball in his hand. He said he came aboard to end his life, driven by despair from friends. He was taken to Gravesend workhouse for treatment, where doctors traced the weapon and examined him. He refused to name himself, citing fear of a reporter. He is about 22, wearing a black suit and satin stock, with initials H J C on his shirt. The pistol was a small bore pocket pistol. The incident prompted immediate medical and police attention.
