Distressing death at Harewood Arms and related village mischief

An elderly, long‑unemployed man staying at the Harewood Arms in Ebham was found near collapse and later died. The keeper and the apothecary ordered care, but the man perished from malnutrition and distress. A coroner recorded the verdict of death from want of life’s common necessities. Separately, a dramatic town tale recounts a love‑gone‑wrong plot where students assaulted a barber during a staged pursuit after a young woman’s letter. In Plymouth and nearby towns, cases of contraband, a tricky rescue at the coast, assault at Stanwell, a laudanum tragedy in Stockton, and other local incidents are noted with minimal detail.
