Destructive fires and various notices from the era
Monday morning a large tallow melter and candle manufactory in Islington was destroyed within an hour. Earlier, Kent and Co brush workshops in Great Marlborough Street burned, confined to the workshop. Notices mention imports from Germany, a chancery arrears petition, a drowning at a canal lock, a hospital charity sale, autographs sold, tea deliveries, and Duchess of St Albans’ memoirs. Accidents, insolvencies, court cases, and public meetings fill the rest of this miscellaneous column.

Betting-room notices shake Derby odds and falcon in England
In Tattersalls on Monday the Derby favourite Grey Milton faced renewed doubt as Lord George Bentinck hinted the horse would skip the Derby to target safer engagements. Odds moved on several contenders including Launcelot Wardan Angelica colt and Ishmael with prices fluctuating. A fine two-foot-two-inch falcon weighed 23 pounds and is now stuffed for public viewing at Princes Risborough. A brief foreign hunting note praises English fox hunting while a German steeplechase near Stuttgart reports six starters and Lt Silberhorn winning in twelve minutes. A Ayr Townhead family reports a cat delivering a live fluke from garden waters.

Destructive Fire in Widegate Alley Claims Eight Lives
A disastrous fire in Widegate alley near Bishopsgate early Tuesday morning claimed eight lives and damaged multiple properties. Fire brigades from Jeffrey Square and nearby stations fought the blaze, with collapse of Nos 9 and 10 endangering occupants and triggering a thorough search that uncovered several victims. Eyewitness accounts describe frantic scenes of families fleeing and a woman leaping from a first floor window. Police and fire crews conducted a careful recovery operation as investigators assess origin, with preliminary notes suggesting possible neglect of light by Flood, a resident, though the exact cause remains uncertain. Property losses run high across Nos 7 to 11 and adjacent Windsor Place, with several tenements uninsured. The city police and fire authorities coordinated evacuations and guarded the ruins to prevent looting.

Giant gas inflated figure floats on Guy Fawkes day
A twelve foot aerial machine inflated with gas rose from a Pentonville resident's premises and drifted for some time before landing in the garden of Mr Smith, a Bethnal Green beerseller. Witnesses likened its swaying limbs to a walking giant and many believed it to be a living being with supernatural powers. The beerseller has since profited by displaying the craft to customers.
