On Wednesday in High Street Newton a man named John Davis aged 32 a carpenter residing in Walworth Road Francis Street was on his way home to his dinner when smoke was seen issuing from his left hand pocket alarms spread among foot passengers. His clothing caught fire but he removed his coat and flames were extinguished. The fire was caused by a tobacco pipe not properly extinguished placed in his pocket.
