Deadly Gunpowder Explosion at Dale Street Ironmonger Shop
Ten minutes after seven on a Saturday evening, a terrible gunpowder explosion rocked Richard Jones ironmonger at 58 Dale Street Liverpool. The blast injured Jones, his shopman Evan Davies, and Buckstone the errand boy, plus several others, causing extensive property damage to a three story shop with cellars. About 24 cwt of powder was found after the fires were checked, and two workers remained in danger while Jones showed some recovery in sight. A boy Buckstone died from injuries, leaving Jones partially recovered but still in danger.

A Postscript and a Sewer Scene in 17th Century Tone
A fragmented review piece moves through a rhapsodic postscript from Hewletts tale, a vivid sewer duel between Hampton and Canfield, and a travelogue-esque vignette with a French diligence crowd. It riffs on literary figures, journals, and London public notices framing a mix of fiction and periodical satire.
Fires Timber Yard and Wheat Stack Blaze at Northileet
A large fire at Mr Mace’s Perry Street farm Northileet destroyed a ninety quarter wheat stack despite two engines on site. The blaze spread to nearby stacks but was contained within five yards. Authorities suspect incendiary involvement based on past losses. A separate early-evening fire at Mr Barnes’s Pentonville Road timber yard damaged nearby residences, with firefighters hindered by water supply. No definitive cause given. In Waterloo Town a two-year-old died after a scalding accident involving boiling water from a saucepan placed on the floor near a fire. Verdict: accidental death. Also a fatality report on Mr William Dakin after a gig accident in Woolwich.
