The Royal Bank of Liverpool Directors Meeting Report

Retirement of Viscount Enfield as Secretary of the Board of Control

The Viscount Enfield retires from the Secretaryship of the Board of Control. George Cornewall Lewis, MP for Herefordshire, succeeds him. Mr. Merivale becomes Assistant Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, replacing Mr. Stephen. Dr. Riddell, Bishop of the northern district, dies of typhus fever in Newcastle upon Tyne. A lunacy commission order allows Mr. Dyce Sombre full use of his income, with £4,000 yearly to Mrs. Dyce Sombre. An insolvent case before Commissioner Law reveals a romantic tale of debt and failed support, with adjournment to produce key witnesses.

Death of the Archbishop of York in Bishopthorpe

The Archbishop Edward Harcourt died at Bishopthorpe Palace on Friday after a period of illness. Born 1757, educated at Westminster and Christ Church, he served as Bishop of Carlisle before his 1807 translation to York. He presided over York for forty years, supporting church care, education, and restoration, and was widely respected across classes.

Daring robbery of Dr Bowring and companions in Talbot

A letter from Port Talbot reports the most daring robbery in the country. Dr Bowring M P and his brother were halted near an iron works by two men with pistols, money and notes totaling around £2,000 were surrendered, a horse shot, one robber captured with £138 14d, another later found with £510 near the author’s house, reputedly “Tipperary Boys.” Several related incidents and explosions are also noted.
