Prince Paul Lieven and Tolstoy Ride Fast Trotter
Prince Paul Lieven and M Tolstoy traveled seventeen miles from town to Epsom in a tilbury drawn by a swift trotter in just over an hour. The horse showed no distress from the journey. A destructive fire at the Wheatsheaf public-house Holywell Street Strand caused fatality and extensive property damage. Firemen alerted lodgers and summoned engines from St Mary le Strand and others, and while the ravages were checked by seven o'clock, casualties and extensive damage to adjoining houses and shops were confirmed. The lodger who died has not yet been identified.
