Death of the Lord Lieutenant Besborough in Ireland
The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland Earl Besborough died at Dublin Castle after a long illness. He sank gradually from Sunday night, bade farewell to family, and remained conscious to the end. Born 1781, he led a long public career in Whig politics, governed Ireland during famine, and his death triggers announcements of his state lying in the Castle chapel and an impending funeral. The Freeman's Journal notes his duties continued with vigor to the last, and Lord Clarendon is named as his successor. Reports on O'Connell and Parliament dissipation also appear in the issue.
