In the Imperial Parliament on Monday and Tuesday, March 24–25, debate covered arsenic sale regulation with purchaser signing, colour coding, and witnessing. millers' import concerns and protectionist notes. Also discussed were church status in colonies, tithe assessments, alien threats, and papal aggression protests, with adjournments after long sessions.
Lord Lyndhurst raised concern about the Central National Italian Committee in this city. He cited its self described elected officers after the Italian revolution and alleged aim to inflame insurrection to establish a central republic in Italy. He noted associates have opened shares in a local association.
In a long Lords and Commons session, MPs clash over the Ecclesiastical Titles Bill and Miss Talbot case. Debates touch on Papal aggression, Catholic emancipation, and Protestant fears, with colleagues accusing rivals of intemperate language while urging restraint. The adjournment is moved as arguments continue into the next day.
In a House debate Earl Grey asserts the petition targets penal legislation while the current bill is not such a measure. He notes the hope for avoiding the measure is slim given a recent invasion noted in the other House. Their lordships then adjourned.
The debate resumed with Mr Tlowilouse arguing that bishops' roles are purely spiritual and that legislative limits on episcopal titles are unworthy. He claimed the bill forbids certain names but allows Roman Catholics to effectively have their own bishops, warning of evils from such legislation.
