Peel Budget Analyzed By The History And Politics Column

The piece assesses Sir Robert Peel's financial propositions, outlining a fourfold analysis on finance, national debt and tariff reform and income tax. It critiques projected deficits through 1843, questions funding and tariff logic, and discusses likely revenue from indirect taxes, class impact, and the need for case-by-case tariff review.

Income tax and tariff reform debate in Peel era

The article analyzes Sir Robert Peel's proposed income tax and tariff schedule, detailing affected sectors such as coal exports, Irish duties, stage coaches, and timber. It argues the revenue would be insufficient and warns of adverse effects on coal, maritime trade, and industry while discussing alternatives for equitable taxation and the political risks of opposition. It also surveys broader economic implications and public reaction to tariff changes.
