Terrific earthquake devastates Leeward Islands in daylight

A letter from a traveler aboard the Acteon Steam-ship recounts a major earthquake hitting Barbados, St Thomas, St Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Montserrat, Guadaloupe, and surrounding islands. Widespread destruction includes crushed workers, ruined buildings, damaged churches, and vast property losses estimated in the hundreds of thousands of pounds. The author notes fear, casualties, and efforts to relay news to England while highlighting the impact on sugar works and local infrastructure.

Scene of ruin in Antigua sparks reflections and hopes

Skeleton of an ornament to our city describes a moonlit night after a dreadful calamity. Most St John houses are destroyed or unsafe, some residents shelter on ships in the harbor. Few deaths reported, many wounded, fear of greater harm if disaster struck at night. The writer, William Grant Domaneeg of Antigua customs, hopes English aid will relief the sufferers.
