Central Criminal Court case at Mowpat trial day

In a crowded Central Criminal Court session the Lord Mayor, recorder, sheriffs and under sheriffs presided with about 220 prisoners awaiting trial. A case against Mary Ann Brooks, 22, for stealing a knife and linen failed for lack of evidence and she was found Not Guilty. A second indictment accusing her of stealing a cap and linen also arose with dramatic testimony from Henry Player, a flamboyant witness and former prisoner, whose credulity and mockery overshadowed the proceedings.
