Trial of the Resident at Tanjore faces bribery charges

See proceedings at Guildhall where Mr Bayley testifies about monthly payments from the Rajah of Tanjore totaling around 12,000 rupees per year to fund the Residency. The case links Captain Douglas and the house of Parry as bankers, with furniture costs and a 50,000 rupee demand to smooth Governor Elphinstone’s visit. The jury's verdict favored the defendant on nineteen counts amid complex testimony and government inquiries.
