Meaning of death by own action in insurance policy case

An 1845 Queen’s Bench appeal examined whether death by own action invoked the policy voiding clause. Insurer argued insanity or delusion could negate compos mentis. the court held death by own action means intentional self kill ing, regardless of sanity, and reversed the lower judgment for the plaintiffs in error. The discussion traced the term’s historic usage from Hale to Blackstone and compared with modern understandings.

Murder in Liverpool and a Violent London Trial

A lengthy 1846 Liverpool murder trial details a man accused after a street confrontation and a pistol threat, with testimonies from multiple witnesses. The narrative shifts through police, court, and coroner proceedings, including a separate case of manslaughter in York and remarks on Welsh asylum concerns and railway incidents.

POLICH REPORTS AND WIDOW OF MURDERED MAN SUMMONED

Wednesday a magistrate heard the inquiry into whether the widow of the man recently shot in Drury Lane deserved public sympathy but she did not appear and inquiries were unfavourable. A donor sent £5 to the general fund, not to Mrs Blewite, if she is not a deserving object. John Sledgely faced trial for attempting to murder his nine year old son after a drunken quarrel. He confessed planning the act for months and was committed for trial. James Young was charged with pocket picking at Cambridge station and a female passenger’s purse disappearance led to his arrest. Poor Law Lingratity and Amending the Law in Dorset

The Dorset Poor Laws are strained by low agricultural wages. Beamnneter union offers a schoolmistress job at ten pounds with house provisions, while Sherborne union seeks a porter and gaze with a shoemaker preferred and required to write well. The joint salary is twenty pounds a year with in-house maintenance, wages lower than London domestic pay, yet house provisions boost value. The Amending of the Law meeting in Regept-street disappoints, private and select, with no notable attendees from press. The Willenhall estate in Warwickshire sold for 18 10 guineas to Lord Craven, seven years’ purchase rental, vs. expectations. A Swedish sloop Carledona capsized near Matanzas, 115 perished, 16 saved. Five drownings reported in Montreal and London areas, with inquests on youths and others.
