The Towell Case at Salisbury Arms Inn Inquest
An 1845 inquiry at the Salisbury Arms Inn, before Horatio Waddington and others, investigated the property of the late John Towell the Quaker who was executed in March 1845 for murder. The commission detailed lands and personal effects, including shares in the Australian and New South Wales banks, and the widow Sarah Towell testified as attesting witness to a lease. The jury found all lands and personal property belonged to Towell at the time of his offence.

Coroner resumes inquiry into Dee Bridge disaster
The coroner reopened the inquiry into the Cheater and Holyhead railway bridge collapse over the Dee at Chester. Witnesses describe a bottom crack in a cast iron girder as the train passed, and engineers discuss testing and construction flaws. The jury verdict blames insufficient strength of the girder and calls for a government inquiry into similar bridges.

Central Criminal Court session opens with murder and manslaughter charges
The court resumed sittings with a long calendar of serious offences including six murder and four manslaughter counts. Solomon Israel, James Magnus and Elizabeth Magnus faced trial for defeating justice. Anne Davis and others were bound over to prosecute. Verdicts found all defendants guilty and sentences imposed. Additional cases include a wife’s assault with a knife, a tea shop theft by a wife, fraud in horse dealing, and other indictments. The session also heard concerns over defence funding and the need for proper legal counsel in manslaughter cases.
