A London public meeting at the London Tavern praised Lord John Russell and urged support for Free Trade over monopolies. Speaker Samuel Jones Loyd affirmed liberal reforms and a government of wise, just policy, while attendees organized funding for the coming contest and stressed a broad, non sectional backing for reform.
Writs directing elections are issued to sheriffs and high sheriffs with mandates to proclaim election dates not less than four nor more than eight days after proclamation. Boroughs follow similar steps via the county high sheriff. County proclaims set for ten to sixteen days after writ receipt, with prorogation timing noted in the London Gazette. A suicide at Waterloo Bridge is reported with identification clues and a probable age around 22.
The Quebec Mercury reports a catastrophic cliff detachment on Champlain Street near the Custor House. Eight houses were destroyed, many residents buried under rock as authorities and garrison soldiers began rescue work. Thirteen deaths reported, with several injured including children. Nuns from Hotel Dieu aided victims. Coroner's inquest held. names of victims and missing persons listed amid ongoing recovery efforts. Some residents claim tremor felt from Diamond Harbour to the Upper Town overnight.
From the Quebec Mercury May 22, a shipwreck tale of the brig Minstrel leaving Limerick for Quebec with 141 emigrants. The vessel struck Red Island Reef, boats launched, most perished as the ship sank suddenly. Eight survivors reached White Island then Grosse Isle. Captain Outerbridge perished saving passengers. Names of survivors and toll detailed, including crew and passengers.
Prince Albert visits Oxford for the annual commemoration with the Duke of Wellington, chancellor, and university heads. A crowded theatre, Latin address, prize essays, and a Creweian oration precede a town hall reception and tours of Bodleian library, Christ Church, and New Hall chapel before dinner at Nuneham with Oxfordshire cavalry escort.
A gunner in the Royal Artillery fatally shot bombardier John Grace at the Woolwich garrison after intoxication and a quarrel. The assailant, James M Garrettey, a veteran of fifteen years, was arrested. an inquest found him guilty of wilful murder. The incident prompted a high profile military inquiry with officers and guards testifying. Grace died from a musket wound likely in the liver, with the coroner and jury observing the grim proceedings.
A river waterman Thomas Ross and his son were rescued after their boat was struck by the Nile steamer near Horslydown. They clung to the overturned craft as the river swelled, previously dodging the ship’s approach and being aided by other watermen. A separate account covers a purse theft at Eton Montem with a lost £10 note, and a Regent Street robbery where a widow’s purse vanished, with police unable to recover it, despite circulating handbills.
