Donkey Cruelty Fines Across Gravesend Court
Frederick Martin faced charges from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after witnesses described him beating two donkeys carrying a man and a woman near the Prince of Orange. The officials testified the animals suffered raw flesh and visible pain. Martin admitted beating one donkey but claimed it was due to the animal kicking. He was fined six pence and sent to Maidstone gaol for 14 days’ hard labour. George Turner and John Kirk were similarly charged and fined. The mayor urged leniency, with Turner fined 11s 6d and Kirk fined 53s, both paid and discharged after the sentences.
