Fatal accident on Bristol and Birmingham Railway
A guard named William Stock died after leaving his seat on a Bristol and Birmingham line passenger train to talk with a contractor on the roof of a carriage. He fell headfirst into the arch of a high bridge near the Barnt Green station as the train passed, was taken to the Queen's Hospital, Holloway Road, and died about five thirty. The inquest returned an accidental death verdict, noting the bridge was properly constructed and Stock had disregarded seating rules. He left a wife and five children.
