Fires, theft, and a double murder trial at Soham
The Soham bench heard charges against Cornelius Harvey and his nephew James Harvey linked to a major village fire and alleged insurance fraud. Witnesses described arson, financial motives, and bail demands while a separate suicide and inquest at Creeplehall revealed a distressed watchmaker, John Reepe Beer, found dead and ruled as death by his own hand after a long period of privation and disgrace. Murder at Sunderland Inquest Opens Amid Dense Crowd
An inquest at the Londonderry Arma over Catherine Hindmarch's death heard vivid testimony. The glass-maker who found the body and Dr. Lee outlined bruises possibly from blows or a fall. Rawling Smith testified about Catherine’s movements with Jonathan Ayre and suspicions surrounding Joshua Turton and others. Witnesses at Ayre's house denied hearing any disturbance after midnight, while others placed a man and woman near the bonnet site early Sunday. The coroner adjourned, with further evidence awaited, as the jury prepared to resume.

Rescue at Chelsea Pier as Elderly Man It Falls Overboard
On Monday at five o'clock the Waverley Chelsea steamer left Cadogan pier with many aboard. An elderly gentleman fell from the forward part in a heavy heel, plunging into the water. Mr George Clifford of the Temple leaped in, despite being a poor swimmer, and managed to grasp and keep him afloat until a tide carried them toward the hawser. A shore boat soon assisted, and both were brought safely ashore.
