Portraits of Russian life and a grand ball in St Petersburg

A long critique and extracts from a British travelogue on Russia contrasts stark depictions of Russian society with praise for a readable English view. The piece describes the Russian marriage ceremony, court life, dress, and customs at Almack's style balls, highlighting lavish rituals, priestly rites, and imperial participation, plus notes on gender roles, beards, and regional fashion. It also recounts a dramatic masquerade anecdote involving the Emperor and a cadet, and ends with brief notices on pensions, Parliament, and colonial matters.
