Dreadful shipwreck on the Goodwin Sands off Deal
A brig called the Shepherdess of 200 tons, laden with coala from Newcastle to Plymouth, foundered on the Goodwin Sands after a fierce gale. Deal boatmen battled the seas to rescue nine crew members, including Captain Turner, eight seamen, and an apprentice, as they clung to rigging for hours before all were saved. The tug-like luggers hauled them aboard, one man escaping when a rope broke, and the loss of the vessel put at over £2000. The wreck later disappeared.
