Frightful Fire at St Saviour's Southwark Church

A near catastrophe at St Saviour's Church in Southwark is described after a vault fire beneath the old church where coffins were stored. Firemen battled dense smoke, candles by the coffins, and an accidental spark from a candle is blamed for the blaze that threatened the Lodge Chapel and prompted precautionary vault checks.
