Sevenoaks Union Report on Workhouse Conditions and Neglect

Officials describe crowded Sevenoaks Union Workhouse in winter 1840 41 with inadequate sleeping rooms and poor care for sick and lying in women. They blame master and matron David and Elizabeth Gain and medical officer Mr Adams for neglect, criticize guardians and visiting committee for not pushing building or better oversight, and note steps to hire a temporary additional building after Dr Rigby and Mr Hancock corroborated crowding and health issues.

O Thou, Protectress of the Poor and Oppressed

A severe poetic critique targets the Tory lords, urging divine guidance for the people and the church. It contrasts workers’ toil with aristocratic luxury and pleads for moral governance and restraint, within a broader sermon-like moral frame. The excerpt then shifts to antiquated reflections on John the Baptist and Christ, and ends with vivid, hostile notes on Portuguese wartime ferocity toward French prisoners.
