Rail passengers and city goods flow strain London streets

A letter from Mr C describes how railway passengers bound for the City from Croydon and other stations dominate the flow, while many so called city bound Omnibuses actually serve non railway routes. He urges relocating goods stations nearer Holborn Bridge to ease congestion and save time and money for businesses and travelers.

Cesar Borgia and Lucrezia Borgia in a Gothic tale

A lengthy literary critique reviews Cesar Borgia by the author of Whitefriars, praising its vivid Parisian fifteenth century setting, strong portraits of Lucrezia and Caesar, and dramatic scenes. It notes lush, ceremonial pageantry but calls for more tonal balance and restraint. The excerpt centers on Lucrezia at a grotto scene, with Bocca and Hospitaller figures in elaborately described costumes and mood.

Distress over rent ends in tragedy at Hanley

An elderly man Joseph Underwood living in a Hanley public house died by suicide after distress for rent was entered on a six month arrears. An inquest heard he faced pressure from bailiffs and on the morning of the sale he drowned himself in a mash tub with his throat cut. Witnesses described distressing conduct by bailiff Shenton and the coroner warned him to temper his authority. The jury returned a verdict of death by temporary insanity while under distress.
