Poor Law Struggles and Free Trade Plea at Meeting

An 1845 labor meeting amid hunger and workhouse hardship features farmers, labourers, and a starving man appealing for bread. A speaker recalls desertion punishment under the Poor Laws while calling for free trade, with petitions to circulate for signature and support from Cobden and Bright. Letters from distressed workers describe rationed bread, high rents, and bleak wages. The crowd disperses after cheers for free trade.

Vermin Kill Woman Found Dead at Dudley Hill Home

Coroner’s inquest at the Hand and Shuttle Tong heard how Sevat Holdsworth, eighty four, was found dead in her bed after a night of bed confinement. Rats, which had gnawed her clothing and her face, were blamed for the death as she attempted to defend herself with a bed stick. She lived in poverty, paid 61 shillings rent, and relied on parish relief, while her step son cared for her with tea and bread. The inquest suggests scavenging rats caused a fatal collapse rather than direct violence.
