Wellington letter on national defence and militia reform

The Duke of Wellington argues Britain faces invasion risk from steam powered naval attack. He urges raising and disciplining a 150,000 strong militia across Britain, Ireland, and Scotland, augmented by regulars costing about £400,000 yearly. He warns of inadequate arsenals and advocates comprehensive ordnance stock surveys and rapid mobilization to protect the coast and ports.

Flogging a Governess in Wallachia scandal shocks Bucharest

A Hanoverian governess, aged 25, employed in the Hospodar of Wallachia's palace, faced a brutal punishment after a dispute involving the nurse of the royal infant. The princess accused the governess of lies, the aide de camp ordered twenty five lashes, and she was dragged to a room and subjected to the punishment before being taken to a hotel abandoned and ruined. The British consul intervened to secure her removal from Bucharest with promises of indemnity. The affair provoked widespread indignation among locals and foreigners, highlighting protections for Hanoverian subjects and diplomatic tensions with Austria.
