Railway and omnibus congestion in London city access

Letter from the Civil Railway Commissioners analyzes how major stations draw city-bound traffic. It notes four-fifths of travelers to the City originate from distant termini like Paddington and Euston, while many buses cluster around stations. The piece argues for nearer city access to reduce delays and improve goods movement, criticizing current distant rail-goods hubs and urging consideration of better near-city receiving points.

The Literary Chronicle and Hatton Letters 1580s Reflections

A long collage of quotes and excerpts from 19th century periodical chatter. It surveys letters of Sir Christopher Hatton to Queen Elizabeth, the court’s indulged witticisms, and satirical passages on Barham Barham and various social anecdotes. It blends literary criticism with vivid portraits of Elizabethan court life and later Tudor-era reminiscences.

Alibi by Storyteller Lane Clears Suspect in Australian Trial

In a Supreme Court case, the defendant claimed he could not commit the robbery because he was at his wast er farm listening to a two and a half hour tale of the Old English Baron. Witnesses testified to his alibi, and after cross examination the storyteller Lane was pressed to continue. Lane recited more of the tale, and the court permitted, leading to an acquittal of the prisoner. Sydney Morning Herald reports the dramatic alibi.
