Extensive Fire destroys Irongate wharf at St Katherine Docks

A major blaze swept Irongate wharf near St Katherine Docks causing extensive destruction of the warehouse complex and two vessels. The fire, fueled by barrels and spirits, raged from early afternoon until late Friday, with fears of greater loss averted by prompt dockside and Tower engines and soldiers keeping crowds back. Estimated damage ranges up to £200,000, with salvage hoped to reduce final costs. No deaths reported, several uninsured or partially insured losses noted among merchants and clerks.
