Disturbances over Peel corn laws lighted Bever town

A correspondent reports a riotous procession through Bever led by activists and bearing portraits of Sir Robert Peel and a mock gallows, followed by large crowds venting against Peel’s Corn Laws. Meetings in Aylesbury and London show growing opposition, with mob action and petitions mounting across districts.

Standing Orders Debated Along With Corn Laws Clash

Sir R Pain urged the house to consider altering standing orders while Accionay and others lambasted the current system. The division ended with 51 for and 187 against, majority against the motion. The debate moved to Exchequer Bills with calls for public access to signings and details. A long committee on corn laws heard Abolition, distress, and sweeping repeal arguments, with MPs urging protection for Ireland and workers, while others warned against free trade and wage impacts.
