Fragmented 1843 miscellany items and notices
A long OCR spill covers varied 19th century items including church appointments, university LL.D. award, insurance talk, legal notices, suicides, inquests, and municipal matters. It mixes religious, legal, and social notes with brief crime, death, and transportation mentions, all in a stray miscellany tone.

Capture of a Nest of Gamblers in St James Street
A dawn police raid at 34 St James Street Piccadilly led by Superintendent Baker and Inspector Freud uncovered a gambling den above a soptician’s shop named Strudwick. Several men were seized including Henry Smart son of the proprietor, who fled and fell from an eighty foot roof, dying soon after. Prisoners Crump Hall and Smith stood before Mr Hardwick with evidence of a gaming house and betting at hazard. Sentences ranged from three pounds to one hundred pounds or imprisonment, with Smart’s penalty mitigated due to the fatal accident. An inquest later found Henry Smart’s death accidental.
