Speech on Corn Laws and protection in Parliament debates
The text recounts parliamentary speeches from 1826 onward debating protection versus free trade. It covers Sir Howard Douglas’s views, criticisms of Liverpool representation, wage and labor concerns, and arguments for protecting agriculture. It also details positions of Peel Russell and O Briens, with references to India, colonies, wool, and domestic industries. The discourse includes admonitions against sudden repeal, support for gradual reform, and appeals to public opinion and national interest as the debate intensifies.
