Peel Defends Bill Amid Debate on Currency Policy

The speaker recounts Sir Robert Peel defending his bill and blaming Bank practices for commercial distress. Peel argues the act should be Parliament policy, while critics claim the measure failed to curb over trading, ensure convertibility, and set a true currency standard. The exchange critiques Peel’s 1847 stance vs 1844 experience and warns that capital and currency are being confused.

The Late Extensive Robbery by Shopwoman

Aene Simons, 26, a well dressed plasterer in Vere Street, is indicted for stealing a large amount of velvet, satin, lace, shawls and other goods valued at about £260 from James Marshall and Company. Philip Devereux Hickman, a merchant, stands charged with feloniously receiving the property knowing it was stolen. The trial, before Mr Justice Coltman, drew a crowded court as prosecutors detail inventory, concealment in a chest, and gifts back to Hickman. Simons claimed wages and a salary plus perquisites. Hickman admitted receiving items from her as presents and aiding in recovery of the property from his chambers. The case includes extensive cross examination about missing stock, salaries, and alleged payments for Simons' father’s mortgage. The jury hears testimony from James Marshall, Hickman, and others, with the court admitting ongoing evidence of many goods seized from Simons and Hickman. The proceedings continue as witnesses recount access to stock and specific items identified as property of the shop.
