Bar and the Press debated in 1845 letter to editor

A reader argues that press reporting on barristers across circuits should not exclude counsel names from circuit reports. He contends the press harms public knowledge and professional standing, rejects punitive withholding, and defends intellectual merit over etiquette. He cites Serjeants Talfourd and Crowder and insists literature lacks corporate privilege.

Arrival of the Great Britain Steam Ship at New York

A correspondent reports the Great Britain arrived safely in New York Harbor on Sunday August 10 after a long voyage from England. Crowds gathered from Brooklyn to the Battery to view the monster ship, which was greeted with mixed opinions on its size and design. Captain Hoskin’s leadership is praised as visitors tour the vessel, while locals debate its elegance and future role as a show ship in New York. The voyage distance and speed are noted, with claim that the Great Britain exceeded typical punctuality for contemporary Atlantic steamers.
