Telegraph dispatch from Admiral Dundas notes Sweaborg attacked by allied mortars and gun boats on the morning of August 9. Firing ceased that morning. heavy explosions and fires burned most buildings in Vargoe and Swartoe including arsenal and dockyards. Few casualties, no Allied fleet fatalities.
Despatch from Admiral Penaud published in the Moniteur details the Baltic attack on Sveaborg on August 14 1855. He states a 45 hour bombardment destroyed stores and magazines, leaving the arsenal a ruin with powder and shell magazines exploding. He notes minor French losses and high seaman morale amid allied fleet victories.
The fortress of Sveaborg on granite isles near Helsingfors is described after a recent bombardment by the Anglo French fleet. The sea fort, once deemed impregnable, received a severe attack with 800 large guns, destroying barracks, maritime works, and the arsenal. Population around 3400. barracks hold over 12 000. two ship basins and a notable port.
General Simpson notes heavy casualties on the 31st as engineers press toward the Great Redan amid difficult terrain and night conditions. Weather improves with rain showers, several reconnaissances toward Baidar and Alupka reveal enemy appears sparse. Vienna reports allied prospects look favorable. Paris-leaning Military Gazette supports an attack, while Osten-Sacken plans potential evacuation of the Marine suburb.
The Odessa Military Gazette correspondent notes that if allies push on the south side, Sebastopol will fall. Gortchakow reorganizes hospitals and forces, about 60 000 to 65 000 defenders, including divisions of Poltawa, Ochotsk, Vladimir, and tribes, while the besiegers gain ground. A later report details a Woronzoff road sortie by about 2 000 foes, repelled with light casualties. Captain Montagu returns. General England retires on medical advice after serving in Crimea.
The correspondence covers a Russian sortie near the Little Redan with 160 men, and reports on Cambria’s filthy voyage to Balaklava, harsh weather, muddy camps, and fly infestations. It notes health issues among troops, cholera in the 72nd, and French army sanitary state. It mentions batteries near Malakoff and renewed efforts to assault.
The report describes a night engagement where a small French working party, aided by Chasseurs a Pied and the 10th Line, repelled Russian assaults. Casualties were light with eight Russians dead and one wounded who died. Sergeant Casaus and Foot Chasseur Eye are noted for bayonet kills. Despite Russian artillery, efforts to advance to the besieged position continued with strong leadership acknowledged.
