Alleged Murder of an American Captain on the High Seas
A Liverpool report claims Captain E B La master of the ship Thomas Bennett was slain by his cook John Kent during the voyage to Charleston. The vessel left Liverpool on December 3 carrying cargo valued around £30,000. The captain, American and married, was reportedly intoxicated and attacked the cook after disputes over dinner. The cook allegedly killed the captain with a large knife, nine deep stab wounds found on the body, and was placed in irons. The coroner’s inquest was adjourned and the cook held in Bridewell.

MONEY MARKET AND CITY INTELLIGENCE SUMMARY
Market notes show little change in government securities and stocks with cautious activity on the London Exchange. Gold and foreign exchange reflect disparities between Paris London and Hamburg valuations, while peace news between France and Morocco steadies sentiment amid weather dampening harvest hopes. Railways remained steady as Mehemet Ali’s abdication lightly influenced markets. overall funds and shares traded with modest firmness and subdued turnover.
