Father Mathews Temperance Mission in Kennington Common
The Reverend Theobald Mathew resumed teetotal pledge administration at Kennington Common with crowds, many temperance societies, and 6000 present at peak. 5000 pledged on Monday and 3500 on Tuesday, plus 1500 on Wednesday, with supporters including Earl Stanhope and several clergymen. The procession faced disruption when a man assaulted a servant. Mathew continued to address thousands, with further pledges and remarks by Protestant and Catholic leaders. He then toured Fulham, where about 3000 people gathered to take the pledge.

American manners and hotel life with Yankee visitors
In a Montreal Ottawa hotel scene a guest recalls Yankee visitors at Governor Thomson in lively terms. A British regiment in kilts impresses guests while a New York style remark tops the humor. A balcony and window view exposes the hotel life and etiquette amid political figures. A thief notice notes a prior theft of a light coloured silk velvet trimmed Macintosh and a remedy via returning to the Ottawa hotel.
