Somerville forged British claims certificates exposed in inquiry
A public inquiry revealed Alexander Somerville forged endorsements on certificates of arrears and gratuities issued to British auxiliary legion veterans. The scheme involved multiple intermediaries Hopkins Gilbert Baudry Williams and Scott, who sold or transferred certificates at distressed prices. Investigations traced transfers to Melbourne, Glasgow Belfast and London, with over 4000 certificates still out and Somerville believed to be in the Isle of Man.
Convicted Robbery Figures Recalled and Reduced Sentences
At Chester on Saturday two men previously convicted of robbery and given fourteen years transportation were recalled by Justice Erskine. He doubted the first indictment count, then re sentenced them to seven years. Remarkable exhibition of animal magnetism in Hanover Square
A London audience witnessed M. Delafontaine and an accompanying girl perform magnetic experiments. A man from St Bartholomew's hospital and two Cambridge youths were magnetised with catalepsy, pins, and shocks used without apparent pain. One subject bled slightly after a lancet was used. another slept within minutes and later described strong sensations and fainting-like experiences. The report questions imposture while noting the room's orderly, respectable crowd.
