Calcutta Merchants’ Bankruptcy Case Before Commissioner Fane
In a Bankruptcy Court session the well known Calcutta merchants who failed in 1832 for £3,000,000 faced delays over four years as Indian assignees sent no accounts. A creditor sought permission to read correspondence with Calcutta, alleging an assignee fled with £60,000. A second Insolvent Debt Court matter recounted a £76,000 failure with board claims of £97 arising from loss of possessions and alleged improper ties with a Mrs. Schrieber, debated under cross examination and solicitor instructions.
