Last Week's News. Lucrum Taratas.
On Monday night this house opened for the benefit of Madame Vestris and Mr. Charles Mathews. In his farewell address Mr. Mathews announced a gradual system of improvement for the next section, though the theatre’s taste and spirit may scarcely fulfill it. The mise en scène shows uniform elegance and careful arrangement. Pieces are light but well chosen, performed with a style suggesting the theatre’s fortunes hinge on it. Madame Vestris has given a distinctive artistic character across the Olympic Covent Garden and Lyceum theatres. The current theatre eschews the legitimate drama, offering vaudeville and burlesque in a first rate style.

Goodwood race meeting features mixed results and disputes
At Goodwood numerous races including the Chesterfield Cup and Nassau Stakes produced tight finishes. Valentinia won by a length ahead of Marquis of Conyngham, with complaints of foul riding earlier involving Jelly Fish. The Derby Plate saw Emilius filly defeat Jolly Fish, while Valentina’s win highlighted strong contenders among three-year-olds.
