Cotton Twist Critiques Peel on Guizot Like Policy
In a sharp public letter dated July 30, 1841, COTTON TWIST castigates Sir Robert Peel for advocating a Guizot inspired middle path. He denounces the attempt to import French “Juste-Millieuism” into England, argues Peel lacks Thiersian resolve, and presses Peel to address bread costs, wages, and relief for the poor. The piece contrasts English and French politics, condemning expediency over principle and urging action over rhetoric.

Death in the Penitentiary and a Ward Nurse
An inquest at the General Penitentiary Milbank into the death of Mary Read, aged fifteen, from malignant typhus fever after a May 1839 conviction for theft. Post mortem showed ulcerated bowels and inflamed lungs. A second inquiry at St Bartholomew’s hospital reviewed the death of John William Weeks, nine, who died after a swing accident and alleged abusive treatment by a ward sister. The coroner censured the sister, deeming her conduct extraordinary and improper.
