Military Outrage at Whitehall Sentry Case
Mr. Thomas William Sedgeley faced magistrates on a charge of obstructing a sentinel and assaulting him. The sentinel testified that Sedgeley leaned on railings for over ten minutes and refused to move, ignoring orders and risking a confrontation with a bayonet at his chest. Sedgeley described his sketching a column in Whitehall Gardens and claimed self defense, saying he knocked the bayonet aside and restrained the guard’s firelock, while Sir Robert Peel and others supported him as unfairly treated. The sergeant said the sentinel must prevent loitering at his post, and Sedgeley was fined one shilling for discharge, which he protested as unjust.
